The legal industry is thriving and always in need of skilled professionals to carry out the rather complicated process involved in providing legal services. As you can imagine, the legal profession has hundreds of possible avenues for those interested in working in the legal field.
Below is a list of law related careers, although not all inclusive, this list comprises a broad list of core legal careers available today:
- Lawyer - Lawyers or Attorneys as they are also called facilitate legal advice or represent clients in all forms of legal matters
- Paralegal – Also referred to as legal assistants, paralegals assist attorneys with day to day operations within their legal practice.
- Legal Assistant – Interchangeable with Paralegals or Legal Secretary
- Litigation Support Professional – assist attorneys organize and manage the overwhelming tasks of the litigation process and associated technologies for doing so.
- File Clerk – Organize and maintain large file systems for legal firms of all sizes. They also may manage file logs and possible off-site storage facilities.
It is never too late to start a career in the legal industry, as many would think is the case. Many employers within the legal field actually prefer hiring and working with older paralegals or legal grads because they tend to be more grounded, committed and focused.
Additionally, many fields are transferrable and complement a career as a legal professional. For instance, accountants can become tax attorneys, or a real estate agent can pursue a career as a real estate attorney. As you can see, the legal field is perhaps one of the most broad ranging career paths you could pursue.
That being said, just like in any industry, there is some age discrimination and some paralegal or other legal jobs may be limited. This is mainly within the major law firms that source their talent from other law firms or law school grads. However, there is lots of opportunity within small to medium size firms, both in the private sector and with the government and public interest firms.
